On July 16, 2010 the U.S. Postal Service celebrated the Dennis the Menace series by dedicating a series of five Sunday Funnies commemorative stamps.

On July 16, 2010 the U.S. Postal Service celebrated five iconic American newspaper comic strips with their dedication of the Sunday Funnies postage stamps. The 44-cent first-class commemorative stamps honor Archie , Beetle Bailey, Dennis the Menace, Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes.

Dennis the Menace Comic Strip History

According to Don Markstein's Toonopedia.com, Dennis the Menace made its first appearance on March 12, 1951 in sixteen newspapers as the brainchild of creator Hank Ketcham.

Dennis the Menace centers around a 5 1/2 year old boy named Dennis who consistently annoys his neighbor Mr. Wilson with his antics. Dennis' parents are not immune to his antics, either.

After its initial appearance in newsprint, Dennis the Menace experienced rapid growth in popularity that saw it break the 1,000 newspaper barrier early in its run. It is currently published in over 1,200 newspapers worldwide.

USPS Dennis the Menace Stamp

The Dennis the Menace Sunday Funnies stamp features Dennis at a full run heading off into some new area of trouble. USPS Art director Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland selected the Dennis the Menace image that appears on the stamp.

U.S. Postal Service Eastern Area Vice President Megan Brennan dedicated the Sunday Funnies stamps at The Ohio State University, home of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum. Joining the dedication were OSU Executive Vice President and Provost Joseph Alutto and OSU Libraries Director Carol Pitts Diedrichs. Also in attendance as special guests were various creators, artists, and writers from the honored comic strips. These guests included Beetle Bailey creator Mort Walker, Garfield creator Jim Davis, Dennis the Menace artists Marcus Hamilton and Ron Ferdinand, Archie Comics newspaper strip writer Craig Goldman, and Calvin and Hobbes Editor Lee Salem.
